Rabbi's Teaching
Were would you start in looking for the foundation of a Biblical based community.
The way I see it, we could go back to Noah and to Abram, Isaac and Jacob, but all we really have is a Family and the family run business, not a community as such. Although they had more people than many congregations do today, but these communities were dictated by one leader, the head of the Family.
But the establishment of a community as I am looking at it, starts with Moses in the wilderness.
Leaders : Moses, Aaron, Joshua, Caleb and the 70 Elders, then the establishment of judges or leaders over small groups.
But what did Moses do that turned these tribes into a community?
Cecil Roth writes it this way in his book "A History of the Jews:" "He laid down the basis of an advanced moral and ethical system. He promulgated a code of laws, which formed the foundation of Jewish practice and jurisprudence to our own day, as well as of much of the humanitarian idealism of modern times." (Promulgate - make known by public proclamation; Jurisprudence - the formal principals upon which laws are based).
